sales was over $200 billion in 2008! According to The 2008 State
of Retailing Online, the ninth annual Shop.org study conducted by
Forrester Research, Inc. (Nasdaq:FORR) of the 174 retailers, 2008
online sales (including travel) rose 20% to $211.4 billion. Sales
excluding travel will reach $138 billion.

a fringe benefit for a business that wants to grow and thrive. It's
a must!

By
the end of 2004, the Internet had over $52 billion in retail sales!
By 2005 the web saw a jump of 40% in non-technological purchases
over the previous year. These statistics according to www.hitwise.com,
a company that keeps track of Internet stats such as shopping numbers
and search engine results.
In 2006 we saw billions more dollars spent online than ever before.
A recent report by Goldman Sachs, Nielsen//NetRatings and Harris
Interactive showed that holiday shoppers spent more than $30.1 billion
online in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2006! The report revealed
that every category tracked in the study experienced growth. Health
and beauty increased 58 percent. Sporting goods shot up 43 percent.
Computer hardware and software tied auto and auto parts, both growing
by 13 percent.
Online
spending reached $666.9 million on December 12, the highest-earning
day of the 2007 holiday season! Data released by comScore
Networks tracked money spent during key days in December.
The
first 48 days of the holiday season, November 1 through December
18, amounted to $20.65 billion spent online. That's a 25 percent
increase over the first 48 days in 2006. Over $600 million was spent
during each of 12 days in the period. The highest-spending day was
Wednesday, December 13, when consumers spent $666.9 million on e-commerce
sites. The highest-spending day in 2005 was Monday, December 12
at $556 million.
Online
retail sales for the year were up roughly 25 percent over last year.
Between January and October, e-commerce sites rung up $77.5 billion
in sales, up 24 percent from 2006. November and December are forecast
to reach $24.6 billion (forecast revised on December 20), a 25 percent
increase over sales in the same time period a year ago.
Most people shop online not only for the convenience factor, but
also to pay the lowest price possible on any given item, however
comparison shopping takes a lot of time. In August, a long-time
eBay tools developer Vendio introduced the first comparison shopping
Web browser toolbar called Dealio.
Dealio automatically scours the 'net for the best prices for almost
any given item a shopper is looking for. You could be on Circuit
City's site looking for a plasma TV and all of a sudden up pops
the Dealio toolbar with 25
other sites selling the same TV. ECommerce Guide tested the initial
version of Dealio and it worked as advertised. The only drawback
is that Vendio hadn't released a version for Firefox or for Mac
users.
As with most Internet technologies, competitors and copycats soon
followed, like toolbars from NexTag.
No doubt, 2008 will see more comparison shopping toolbars available
for eager shoppers.
It seemed as though more and more people were finally seeing the
benefit of shopping online. Purchasing items from their own homes
became more desirable than trying to run around town finding the
right item and/or gift.
Some
of the reasons for continued growth in online shopping are due to
increased consumer confidence in online shopping sites, the vast
selection available to online shoppers, the recent growth and efficiency
of shipping companies dealing with Internet traffic, and the growth
of the high-speed Internet services. Sign

Consumer Confidence Was Followed By Increased Security
In
the beginning shopping online seemed risky and the average consumer
wasn't willing to risk sending their credit card or personal information
into "cyperspace” for fear that it would be stolen in
transit and used by an unauthorized individual. As banks and credit
card companies began assuring consumers of credit protection services,
more and more consumer spending trickled into the Internet market
place. The rise of Secure Sockets Layer servers (SSL) provided added
protection that also protected shopper information and buying online
became much safer.
Consumer
confidence in the ability of online businesses to protect their
rights as shoppers is at an all time high, thanks in large part
to pro-active security measures being developed all over the Internet.
Online shopping is not only safer, but it is now easier than ever,
with high quality search engines, that make finding the items you
want simple and easy and other companies that offer inexpensive
secure payment processing.
Online
banking, bill paying, and movie ticket buying also made the Internet
feel like a safe place to to spend your money. It was a safe assumption
that once it became safe to do banking transactions and pay bills
online, other companies would put just as much effort into making
sure that it was equally safe to buy flowers, birthday presents,
and laser printers.
Shop
With Ease!
Imagine
two hours of shopping online without ever leaving your house!
Why would someone want to go to one store to purchase electronics,
drive across town to another store to purchase clothes and school
supplies, and then spend the rest of the afternoon grocery shopping
with a car load of goods when they can accomplish most of those
things easily online in a fraction of the time. Not to mention
the great deals they can receive by shopping online simply though
comparison shopping (bouncing from one web site to another to
check prices). This enables shoppers to get the best of both worlds
without dealing with pushy salespeople, heavy traffic, or even
getting out of their pajamas. Shopping across the globe couldn’t
be easier for savvy online shoppers, and the growth and efficiency
of shipping companies these days has made it an even more attractive
prospect.
Delivered
Right to Your Door
Shipping
companies were one of the first industries directly affected by
the rise in Internet shopping over the last couple years. Many
companies now offer special deals for Internet businesses to ship
their goods exclusively, and in return they have passed on savings
to the consumers in the process. Insurance and quality are also
big issues with courier companies, and they have taken steps to
assure that whether goods are going overnight or over the course
of a week it can be assured that they will be handled professionally,
timely, and with the utmost care.
The
last item that will ensure the continued growth of online shopping
is the advancement of high-speed Internet, a tool that makes shopping
at the speed of light a reality. The widespread development and
implementation of high speed Internet over the last few years
has made the transfer of massive amounts of information possible
in relatively short times. This has been a great boon for Internet
businesses. Companies have also begun to make their websites more
interactive, giving them the capability to instantly communicate
with a customer base has further boosted consumer confidence.
Companies are able to handle, process, and respond to complaints
and concerns almost as soon as they come in. High Speed Internet
has the increased flow of traffic with an increased flow of potential
customers and with it a large increase in Internet companies vying
for their business.
The
end result? Internet shopping is easier, safer, and more convenient
than at any point in its history. It's growing at a rapid rate
with no signs of slowing down. It's a reasonable expectation to
believe that any business can be a success on the Internet with
it's increasing popularity.
